Fernando Alonso gunned the Renault V10 as he brought his Championship winning Renault to Parc Ferme after dominating the 19th and final round of the 2005 World Championship. It was little reward for the hard working V10 that cried enough and promptly caught fire, but its job was complete as Renault had taken the race victory and claimed the Constructors?Championship for the first time.

"It has been a fantastic season. Winning the constructors title was not crucial for us but it is very important," said Alonso. "All weekend has been perfect. This was probably my easiest race this year. I'm a little bit frustrated at only winning seven as the car could easily have won 10 or 11."

It was a flawless drive from the 2005 Champion, who kept his head after losing a 20 second advantage under the first safety car period of the day and took the chequered flag four seconds clear of Kimi Raikkonen who just did not have the car to fight for the race win today.

"Renault were simply too quick today. I don't really know why," Raikkonen said immediately after taking the chequered flag. "We'll try again next year. I'm a bit disappointed I could not catch Fernando, but that's racing."

It was however a scrappy race by the high standards of recent events with little on track passing. There were also two serious incidents that would affect the outcome of the race.

The start saw Alonso lead off the Pole Position with team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella backing up the two McLaren Mercedes drivers. The order remain static until the one third distance when a lose drain cover caught out Juan Pablo Montoya and brought out the safety car.

It was bad luck for Montoya who hit the cover at full speed as he sustained damage and then an engine failure and was out of the race and McLaren Mercedes?Championship hopes were all but over. After a long delay the race resumed and Narain Karthikeyan had a huge accident in his Jordan Toyota bringing out the second safety car as the Indian lost control on cold tyres.

This really jumbled up all the but the very front runners as Ralf Schumacher took full use of his options and remained on track while his rivals pitted. Despite stopping under green conditions in the closing stages the Toyota driver took the final podium position behind Raikkonen and Alonso.

Giancarlo Fisichella has an eventful race in the second Renault as he played the team game from the very start in backing up the field. His problem came when he backed up the field to much ahead of the second round of stops under the safety car and he was awarded a drive through penalty for his efforts. The Italian ended his season with a fourth position.

Christian Klien finished in an impressive fifth position in his Red Bull Cosworth and like Ralf Schumacher, used pit tactics to give him the chance of a solid points haul.

Felipe Massa promised Peter Sauber he would try and bring home a prize in his final race and sixth position was a solid effort as he withstood the pressure from Mark Webber to claim his first points since the Turkish Grand Prix.

Mark Webber lost ground by pitting just before the first safety car and from that point onwards his race was compromised. The BMW Williams driver pushed hard all race but could not quite find the speed to make the pass on Massa in the closing stages.

The final point went to Jenson Button and BAR Honda as he too lost ground in the pit stops. It was a low-key end to a fairly disappointing season for the BAR Honda team. Team-mate Takuma Sato jumped the start, took a drive through penalty, ran off track and then retired with a suspected gearbox problem.

David Coulthard finished ninth in the second Red Bull and was another victim of the various strategies deployed around the safety car while Jacques Villeneuve finished tenth in the second Sauber Petronas.

Tiago Monteiro was the best of the Bridgestone runners as he took 11th position in his Jordan Toyota after a solid drive while Rubens Barrichello seemed to run out of tyres and would finish just 12th on a disasterous day for Ferrari.

Michael Schumacher race was compromised even before it began as he and Christijan Albers made heavy contact on the way to the grid. Schumacher primary F2005 was effectively destroyed there and then and he started the race from the pit lane. After not pitting under the safety car, the Schumacher inexplicably spun off into retirement while still running behind the safety car. A bad end to a bad season for all at Ferrari. Antonio Pizzonia was no-where all day long in the second BMW Williams and stopped on the final lap while running 11th. The Brazilian was classified in 13th position ahead of Robert Doornbos in the Minardi Cosworth. Jarno Trulli also had a dismal race and was never a factor. He was running behind the Toyota powered Jordan and simply pitted a lap early. Clearly he is not happy with the revised Toyota chassis. As good a race as Japan was a week ago, this was a scrappy finale to the championship. Alonso never put a foot wrong and Renault did the better job to take the title. The teams now pack up and head back to Europe to begin testing their V* powerplants ahead of the 2006 season.
