George Palaganas Tagle appointed Manila archbishop
By RAYMUND F. ANTONIO
October 13, 2011, 6:32pm

MANILA, Philippines — The Vatican has appointed a staunch defender of the Catholic faith as the new patriarch of the Archdiocese of Manila, replacing retired Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales.

Rome picked Imus (Cavite) Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle to head the richest, as well as the most influential archdiocese in the Philippines, making him the 32nd archbishop of Manila.

Tagle’s selection comes at a most crucial time with the Philippine Congress deliberating on a contentious bill on reproductive health which the Catholic Church is opposing.

The appointment was officially announced in Rome at 12 noon Thursday (6 p.m. Manila time).

The Apostolic Nunciature in Manila relayed the information to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in a letter.

“I write to inform you that the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has appointed His Excellency Most Reverend Luis Antonio Tagle, until now Bishop of Imus, as Archbishop of Manila,” said Monsignor Gabor Pinter, charge d’ affaires.

The outgoing Manila Cardinal Rosales was already up for retirement four years ago, when he turned 75, the mandatory age of retirement for priests and bishops.

However, the Holy See deferred Rosales’s retirement while Rome scouted for his replacement.

Rosales turned 79 last August 10 and has served as Manila Archbishop for seven years. He replaced the late Manila archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin.

With his retirement, Cardinal Rosales said he is looking forward to going home to his home province of Batangas.

“I’m going to Batangas…other people really thought I’m from the Visayas because I speak their language,” said Rosales chuckling.

Asked of his greatest achievement, Rosales cited his encounters with various people, particularly the poor.

“I think it’s having been given the opportunity to get to know the poor more, the good-hearted people, the generous people who continuously help the Church. I thank all of them,” he said.

As the new Manila archbishop, Tagle takes over a powerful post in an archdiocese that, historically, has weighed in on national political issues.

By virtue of its ecclesiastical position, the archdiocese is arguably the most influential local church in the Philippines.

As the new head of Manila’s Roman Catholic Church, he is also likely to be named as the country’s next cardinal, just like his predecessors.

Church observers said the next Manila archbishop faces a crucial role on various socio-political issues, including the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

Sin played this role to the hilt, leading the bloodless People Power events that toppled the governments of then Presidents Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Estrada.

But under Rosales, the influence of the Manila archdiocese was tempered, although not necessarily less belligerent.

Rosales has led public protests against the RH bill, although he has achieved minor successes in galvanizing public support, compared with Sin.

Church observers say that under Tagle, Church and State relations may improve a bit, owing to Tagle’s close ties with the Cojuangcos, President Benigno Aquino III’s relatives.

Pope names Tagle as new Manila archbishop

MANILA, Philippines - Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Imus Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle, a known theologian, as the new archbishop of Manila, a CBCPNews report said Thursday.

Tagle, 54, will succeed Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, who served the influential post for eight years.

Archbishop-elect Tagle’s appointment was officially announced in Rome on October 13 at 12 noon (6 p.m. Manila time).

The information was officially received by the Media Office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Thursday in a communiqué from the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila.

Rosales, who turned 79 last August 16, earlier said that the Vatican had already accepted his resignation early this year, and that he was just waiting for his successor to be named.

Born in Manila on June 21, 1957, Tagle took his Philosophy and Theology at the Ateneo De Manila University’s San Jose Major Seminary.

He was ordained to the priesthood on February 27, 1982, at the age of 25.

From 1985 to 1992, he was sent for further studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where he earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology.

Since 1997, Tagle has been a member of the International Theological Commission of the Vatican. In 1998, he was an expert at the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Asia that took place in Rome.

On December 12, 2001, he was ordained Bishop of Imus. Since then, he has been engaged in many activities. He travels throughout the country in answer to many invitations as a speaker.

At the Synod of Bishops held in Rome in 2005, he was elected member of the post-synodal Council and assistant to Cardinal Angelo Scola, general reporter of this Synod.

Tagle is currently the chairman of the Commission on Doctrine of the Faith of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

No date yet has been set for the ordination and installation of the new Manila archbishop.

Yahoo! announce that Ross Levinsohn will temporarily replace chief executive Scott Thompson, who has stepped down

Scott Thompson reportedly agreed to resign from Yahoo! with some severance pay

In an official press release on Sunday it was announced that Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson had stepped down. According to the release, Ross Levinsohn has been named interim CEO, while Fred Amoroso will be taking over as board chairman, replacing Roy Bostock. The release also revealed that Yahoo had reached a settlement with investor Third Point and would be making three more changes in the board.

Under the board's settlement agreement with Third Point, three Third Point nominees — Daniel S. Loeb, Harry J. Wilson, and Michael J. Wolf - will join Yahoo's board effective May 16, 2012.

According to the release, a few other board members had expressed their intentions of not getting re-elected in the board and have stepped down.

These changes would certainly be impacting Yahoo’s financial strength in the market and investors would also re-evaluate their stakes and returns.

Yahoo’s new CEO, Amoroso, also communicated these changes for the public and disclosed some information. According to a news report by Huffington Post, he said, "The Board is pleased to announce these changes and the settlement with Third Point, and is confident that they will serve the best interests of our shareholders and further accelerate the substantial advances the Company has made operationally and organizationally since last August."

Scott Thompson hasn’t disclosed his reasons for leaving Yahoo, but according to AllThingsD's Kara Swisher, and multiple other sources, the company representatives claim that Scott resigned due to "personal reasons."

Thompson was blamed for embellishing his academic credentials by a Yahoo investor named Daniel Loeb. Daniel pointed out these discrepancies to the Yahoo board by writing a letter to the board on May 3. In the letter, he pointed out that Thompson's claimed that he had earned accounting and computer science degrees from Stonehill College, while he had obtained only an accounting degree.

Thompson wrote to his employees afterwards, clarifying the situation and apologizing to them for the confusion caused. He said, "I want you to know how deeply I regret how this issue has affected the company and all of you," Thompson wrote on May 7. "We have all been working very hard to move the company forward and this has had the opposite effect. For that, I take full responsibility, and I want to apologize to you."

George Palaganas Yahoo! and Alibaba reach $7 billion deal
By Ron Recinto | The Lookout – 1 hr 49 mins ago

Yahoo! announced today it has reached an agreement with Alibaba Group on a staged and comprehensive plan to unlock the Yahoo's investment in the Alibaba.

The plan, which was announced in a release, includes a transaction this year where Alibaba will purchase up to one-half of Yahoo's current stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba. The transaction could generate more than $7 billion in proceeds should Alibaba buy the full amount.

Both companies also set up a framework where Yahoo! can monetize the remaining interest in the Chinese company in stages. First at the time of an initial public offering in the future, Alibaba will be required to either repurchase one-half of Yahoo's remaining stake at the IPO price or allow Yahoo! to sell those shares at the IPO. Also, following an Alibaba IPO, Yahoo! has the option to sell the remaining share at any time it chooses.

"Today's agreement provides clarity for our shareholders on a substantial component of Yahoo!'s value and reaffirms the significance of our relationship with Alibaba," said Ross Levinsohn, Interim CEO of Yahoo! said in the release. "We look forward to continued collaboration with the Alibaba team on business initiatives as we explore joint opportunities for growth and benefit from Alibaba's future. I want to thank Jack Ma, Joe Tsai and the Alibaba team, as well as Tim Morse, Michael Callahan and our Yahoo! team for their dedication in achieving this successful outcome."

"This transaction opens a new chapter in our relationship with Yahoo!," said Jack Ma, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Group stated in the media release. "I look forward to working with Ross Levinsohn and the Yahoo! team as Alibaba builds China's leading e-commerce company. Yahoo!'s global audience reach will provide attractive partnership opportunities for Alibaba to explore markets outside of China. The transaction will establish a balanced ownership structure that enables Alibaba to take our business to the next level as a public company in the future."

The announcement comes a week after Scott Thompson departed as CEO of Yahoo! and Levinsohn was named interim CEO of the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based digital media company. Thompson left the company after inaccuracies were revealed in an official bio.

"The sale of half of Yahoo's Alibaba stake would represent the partial achievement of a goal that has eluded Yahoo for years," Clayton Moran, an analyst at Benchmark Co., said in an e-mailed statement that was reported by Bloomberg. "It appeases shareholders, may give employee morale a much-needed boost, and starts CEO Ross Levinsohn's term with a win."

A Wall Street Journal story included this reaction: "Yahoo Inc. struck a deal late Sunday to sell up to half of its stake in Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. back to the Chinese company for $7.1 billion, finally succeeding after multiple attempts to wind down a seven-year relationship that had recently soured."

Senior media blogger Dylan Stableford contributed to this report.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Perhaps it’s time for the Internet pioneer to change its popular logo from Yahoo! to Yahoo? The company, despite a big house-cleaning over the weekend, still managed to leave a big issue unresolved.

As Yahoo tries to fix its leadership mess, the company made one major mistake in naming its CEO as interim.

Why did the company name the well-regarded Yahoo executive vice president YHOO +0.73% Ross Levinsohn as its “interim” CEO? Read more about Yahoo news.

Levinsohn was probably one of former CEO Carol Bartz’s best hires. He joined Yahoo in October 2010 with a long tenure in media, deal-making and Internet advertising on his resume. He had even spent some years in search, at the early Internet search engine Alta Vista. Some older investors might remember that Digital Equipment Corp.’s Alta Vista was the hot search engine before the rise of Google Inc. GOOG -1.73% .

But the Yahoo board managed to prolong the atmosphere of uncertainty by dubbing Levinsohn “interim” CEO, at the same time that former CEO Scott Thompson stepped down amid résumé-gate. The company also reached an agreement with hedge-fund investor Daniel Loeb, whose firm Third Point LLC had been seeking four seats on the board.

Yahoo

Many investors cheered the news that Loeb won three seats on the evolving Yahoo board, and five board members were immediately stepping down, including much-maligned Chairman Roy Bostock. (Bostock and the four other board members had already previously announced their plans to not stand for re-election.) But the theme on Wall Street for Yahoo investors on Monday was again uncertainty.

“While we view the removal of Thompson and resolution of the proxy fight as a positive, many questions remain,” said Peter Stabler, an analyst with Wells Fargo Securities, in a note to clients. “First and foremost, will the new board team accelerate or alter the company’s position regarding the monetization of Yahoo’s fast-growing Alibaba stake? Until a decision is made on a permanent CEO, we believe progress here could be stalled.”

Indeed, some press reports said that Levinsohn was being considered as the company’s permanent CEO. Investors should hope, though, that Yahoo does not waste too much time on another full-on CEO search, especially after the embarrassing blame-game going on with executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles, which Thompson implied was responsible for not catching the error in his resume. Read All Things D report on the blame game.

Investor Eric Jackson, who has stirred up the pot at Yahoo in the past, said in an interview on CNBC earlier Monday that all the chatter on Wall Street about uncertainty was misguided. He also told MarketWatch that the company needs to do a CEO search for the sake of good corporate governance. Read more about Yahoo's tough search for a new CEO.

Who Is Yahoo's new CEO Ross Levinsohn?
Ross Levinsohn has been named Yahoo's interim CEO after Scott Thompson resigned over the weekend. Mr. Levinsohn comes to the job with a strong ad background. Amir Efrati reports on digits. Photo: Getty Images.

“Some of the misguided analyst comments this morning about Yahoo have said the change in leadership is going to create more turmoil inside the company,” said Jackson, founder and managing member of Ironfire Capital LLC, which owns Yahoo shares. “I have some news for you sell-side analysts, there would have been a heck of a lot more turmoil if Thompson had stayed on. The morale was below the floor. And I think that morale is shooting up today because in general people like Ross Levinsohn; they like that the board stuff is now settled.”

Jackson told MarketWatch he would not be surprised if Yahoo removes the “interim” from Levinsohn’s title in a few months, if he is doing well.

Many investors are, as Stabler pointed, out, nervous about Yahoo’s talks to seek value from its highly valued Asian assets. But Levinsohn is also well regarded as a deal maker. According to our colleagues over at All Things D, he had been lobbying Bartz to acquire Hulu, as part of his vision for Yahoo to move more into original video.

He also was previously president of News Corp.’s NWS +0.16% Fox Interactive Media, where he was in charge of day-to-day operations and strategy and acquisitions, such as its mega-deal to buy then-hot social network MySpace. (MarketWatch is also owned by News Corp.) Read All Things D on Levinsohn.

So with investors like Jackson calling Levinsohn a “super media executive,” who is reportedly well-liked by employees, it’s not clear why Yahoo made his appointment an interim one for now. Hopefully the company will soon end the “uncertainty” chatter and just make it official.

Pride in Seychelles over reported royal honeymoon
Font size PrintE-mailShare0 Comments .(AP) VICTORIA, Seychelles (AP) — With its sandy beaches, clear waters and secluded hideaways, the Seychelles is a
honeymoon destination fit for a future king — and residents say they're proud Prince William and Kate are reportedly honeymooning here.

British media said the pair jetted off Tuesday to the Seychelles, a string of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) off the eastern coast of Kenya.

Prince William and his bride, who are now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are reportedly staying on the archipelago's secluded North Island, some 19 miles (30 kilometers) away from the capital of Victoria.

The island on Wednesday was closely monitored by three national coast guard boats, further fueling local speculation that the royal couple had chosen it as their destination. The coast guard escorted away a boat that came too close.

A company that owns many exclusive, lush islands in remote locations has refused to give out any details of the royal honeymoon until it is over. Buckingham Palace also has requested the royal couple's privacy be respected while they are on holiday.

However, a local newspaper splashed the headline Wednesday morning: "Seychelles in the Honeymoonlight."

The Seychelles has only 90,000 people and is used to hosting celebrities and the fabulously wealthy.

"Many of them come on holiday and walk the streets sometimes unnoticed," said Antoine Onezeim, the chief executive of the island nation's broadcasting corporation. "Our approach is to let the visitors enjoy their holidays in our country without any disturbance."

Still, Marilyn Eder, the owner of the Pirates Arms pub, said she'd be happy to see the royal couple eat at her restaurant.

"I am very happy that they are here on holiday, having a good time," said Rene Vidod, 70, a retired policeman, as he sat at the pub Wednesday morning. "Everyone here is happy."

William proposed to Kate last October in a rustic log cabin on the slopes of Kenya's highest peak, Mount Kenya. Both Kenya and the Seychelles are former British colonies.

George Palaganas Arroyo's most formidable adversary on this endeavor will definitely be coming from the Liberal Party whose contemplating to have a merger with the Nacionalista Party to gain majority hold in Congress. Although Noynoy did not announce Congressman elect Sonny Belmonte as his choice for speakership during the LP Meeting de Avance 07-May-2010 at the Quezon Memorial Circle, he is the forthcoming choice to give Arroyo a run-for-her money. She's the first president to be re-elected to "minor" office after being there at the highest office in the land, making this former-president's gesture unprecedented. Everyone has its own interpretation now of the CONSTITUTION's disqualification clause of "An elected president is disqualified to run for any RE-ELECTION." , a real one for the law books.

George Palaganas President Elect Noynoy's distaste to be sworn-in by an Arroyo appointed Chief Justice will be monitored as a sign of battle of the will and common sense. It's true! Cory was sworn-in into office by a Justice of the supreme court not necessarily the Chief-Justice but that was before there was the 1987 Constitution. Noy-noy should stop putting "impossible" restrictions for himself to be sworn-in into office. After all, he will be appointing Justices to the chamber for the next 6 years, once he has officially assumed the office of the President.

George Palaganas If his disagreement with the new Chief-Justice Corona is personal, maybe we can put pressure to Chief-Justice Corona as at least one constituent is against his appointment, for delicadeza dictates him unfit for that position, like yes! Corona can be a justice but not as chief-justice. How can we send the president legitimately into his office then?
